CeraSalt®
is the answer to one of the 21st century's greatest challenges regarding energy storage.
Manufacturing this Na/NiCl2 energy storage system requires only common salt and nickel on the electrolyte side. These raw materials are available in Europe and are extracted in an environmentally friendly manner compared to lithium and cobalt.
Safety is of paramount importance for any battery technology. In this regard, CeraSalt® offers a significant advantage over lithium-ion technology. Unlike lithium-ion systems, thermal runaway cannot occur; in other words, a self-igniting chain reaction is impossible. Consequently, the Na/NiCl2 storage system does not require individual cell monitoring within the battery management system (BMS). The system operates at approximately 300°C; while this necessitates a heating mechanism, the operating temperature renders the system independent of ambient conditions. This allows for deployment in hot regions, such as sub-Saharan Africa or desert areas—environments where lithium-ion batteries would be energetically inefficient due to the cooling requirements involved.
Since the cells generate heat during charging and discharging, an efficiency rate of over 85% is achieved. The cells are connected in series. Should a cell fail, the module continues to operate because the cells are designed to fail in a low-resistance state, allowing the module to keep running. This represents another major advantage over lithium-ion technology. Furthermore, the Na/NiCl2 storage system is almost 100% recyclable. Thanks to lower raw material costs and reduced BMS complexity, the Na/NiCl2 system also presents a cost-effective alternative for stationary applications.
With charge and discharge rates of 0.2 C and 0.25 C respectively, the Na/NiCl2 system operates more slowly than lithium-ion technology; however, this is not a significant drawback for stationary applications.
The CeraSalt® battery storage system: environmentally friendly and safe thanks to non-flammable materials.
CeraSalt® is the answer to one of the 21st century’s major energy storage challenges.
